MOONLESS by Crystal Collier

Series: Maiden of Time #1
Publication: November 13th, 2013
Category: Young Adult (YA)
Genre: Historical Paranormal Romance

Description:  In the English society of 1768 where women are bred to marry, unattractive Alexia, just sixteen, believes she will end up alone. But on the county doorstep of a neighbor’s estate, she meets a man straight out of her nightmares, one whose blue eyes threaten to consume her whole world—especially later when she discovers him standing over her murdered host in the middle of the night.

Among the many things to change for her that evening are: her physical appearance—from ghastly to breathtaking, an epidemic of night terrors predicting the future, and the blue-eyed man’s unexpected infusion into her life. Not only do his appearances precede tragedies, but they’re echoed by the arrival of ravenous, black-robed wraiths on moonless nights.

Unable to decide whether he is one of these monsters or protecting her from them, she uncovers what her father has been concealing: truths about her own identity, about the blue-eyed man, and about love. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with the man of her dreams and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

Praise for MOONLESS:
Bethany Kaczmarek, editor at A Little Red, Inc: MOONLESS is powerful, compelling, and packed with soul. MOONLESS is wonderful. So many threads, such rich backstory. Such amazing world-building. It was familiar England, yet always hinting at a sense of Otherness. Made me wonder if those things had really been there all along and I missed them.
Sharon Johnston, author of SLEEPER: Collier transports us to a time of elegance and mixes in supernatural splendor that gives goosebumps.
Hi Alexia and Kiren .... It's great to meet you. Let's begin by one of you giving us a little insight into your world.
Kiren: Do you believe in fairy tales? The Brothers Grimm? What you must understand is that these stories were spawned off of something much more primal and horrifying. We occupy that world, and we control it so you will never have to face such truths.

Ooh, you've intrigued me and I'm sure these readers. Mind sharing a bit about yourselves?
Alexia: I am seventeen and the only child of Baron Charles Dumont. He hid me away for fear I would never marry because of an unbecoming exterior—not that he will confess this. I expected to become an old maid, but with my father’s fortune as an inheritance, I should have realized this would never be.

Kiren (kie-ren): You wish to know about me? I am flattered. Thank you, but no.

Oh-kay then, Kiren. Moving on. What's been your biggest challenge in life?
Alexia: Accepting what I am. You can spend your entire life believing a lie because it’s easier or safer, but to embrace the truth? That takes true courage.

Kiren: I too have struggled with who I am, but more especially acting the part. It has required that I sacrifice so many things, and I am tired of sacrificing.

If you were honest, what would you say is your biggest quirk?
Alexia: Perhaps avoiding mirrors? Or reflective surfaces of any kind—even after the drastic changes in my appearance. They feel like lies. Maureen, my nanny, also used to insist my reading was not a particularly attractive trait, but I do enjoy the escape.

Kiren: Reading people’s thoughts. It is impolite, but it has saved me more headaches than I care to mention.

Inquiring minds want to know. What do you REALLY think of each other?
Alexia: *blushes* He is too stunning to be real.

Kiren: *fixes Alexia with a smirk* But you are obsessed with me, regardless.

Alexia: As is any woman who lays eyes upon you. It is a cruel injustice you do the fairer sex.

Kiren: I love that you are lecturing me after, let me see? *tapping his chin* How many suitors offered themselves to you?

I'm with Alexia on this one, Kiren. Cute...

So, what's Crystal like to work with?
Alexia: She spends far too much time eating cheese.

Kiren: And reading books. And teaching children. And writing music.

Alexia: We adore her.

Aw, I bet that just made her day. And mine, for that matter. You both are a wonder. Thank you for sharing yourselves with the Alleyway!

Crystal, author of MOONLESS, is a former composer/writer for Black Diamond Productions. She can be found practicing her brother-induced ninja skills while teaching children or madly typing about fantastic and impossible creatures. She has lived from coast to coast and now calls Florida home with her creative husband, three littles, and “friend” (a.k.a. the zombie locked in her closet). Secretly, she dreams of world domination and a bottomless supply of cheese. BLOG | WEBSITEFACEBOOK | TWITTER  ❀Unleashing the dream world, one book at a time ❀

  7. This interview was so much fun to read! Alexia's crack about Crystal eating too much cheese had me giggling far too much, heh. Kiren's resistance to sharing anything about himself had me laughing, too. Loving these characters already!
