MY DATE from HELL: The Blooming Goddess Trilogy by tellulah darling

Genre: Young Adult Romantic Comedy, Greek mythology
Publisher: Te Da Media
Released: October 31, 2013

I'd like to thank the publisher for supplying me with an eCopy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

Favorite Line/Passage: Even remedial me knew the significance of pomegranates and Persephone. Plus, hello. My favorite fruit. He'd inked me on him. Okay, Persephone, but maybe he'd ink Sophie on him some day. Because having a guy declare his devotion to you that way was cool--provided he was more babe than bubba and hadn't gotten the spelling of your name off your restraining order.

Description With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly in My Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.

NIGHTSTAND WORTHY!

My Splats: humor and wit abound in Book II of this take on Greek Mythology's own Persephone!

So this is Book II in this series. I want to mention the prologue. Some readers like them, while others don't. This one is effective in that it gives an adventurous and humorous rendition of the story to date starting with: The Cheat Sheet to My Life Thus Far

Darling has another hit on her hands. Sophie is hilariously sly, yet streams in streaks of real, too. She's the girl in the crowd who will say what everyone else is thinking but are too chicken or wound up in their social status to be honest. She's strong and comes out with some slamming snark to boot. Seriously. There were many times, while reading, that I found myself wishing I could high-five her. That, in itself, made this a fun read. (Just a note: although this is definitely teen appropriate, I'd recommend it to older teens. Some references hold sexual innuendos, but nothing offensive.)

Without giving too much away, the romance-in-waiting between Kai and Sophie (really a teenage Persephone) hosts much tension and heat; heat which eventually fans to full on fire. But, as one would expect, obstacles find ways to block their path to each other, leading the two, along with a few 'young' mythological characters, on a journey to jog Sophie's Persephone memory. There's athleticism, fantasy, and excitement as the group moves closer to reaching their goals. The writing is vivid, especially the dialog, which gives the characters so much uniqueness. I truly enjoyed Kai and Sophie's dysfunctional relationship.

An elevating emotional level is also present as the story progresses to the climax. Kai and Sophie learn to trust each other, and then there are moments of question and doubt. The twist of teenage Sophie longing for a mother/daughter relationship like her-past-goddess-self Persephone had with her mother Demeter was a nice add. Even though it's of Greek element, teen girls of today will surely relate to this part of the story.

The cast of supporting characters is masterful, each adding dimension to the story. There are gods with ditsy personas and some who act like the next televangelist. Fee is by far my favorite secondary character. He's funny, intelligent, and taps upon a few fantastic elements of society today.

FYI: An added twist at the end made my head spin. I can't wait for Book III. Oh, the angst!

Here's a peek at Book I:

Description: Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

    1. I agree. It was a nice break from some of the serious stuff I've been reading, lately. It was fun. But don't get me wrong. By the end, there were a few serious issues facing the main character.

    1. There were truly some funny parts, like Aphrodite resembling a ditsy Dolly Pardon. Haha! That part was great.
