Oh My Stinkin' Root!

MMGM aka Marvelous Middle-Grade Monday was created by Shannon Messenger to give middle grade reads the attention they deserve. I'm joining in, today. If you'd like to see more MG books, click HERE to follow other participants.

Do I have a Middle Grade read for you. This book is stuffed with boy humor, girl sass, and ZOMBIES! Yes, you read that correctly.

Zombies.

As in flaking skin, blank stares, body parts falling off ... Okay, that last one only consisted of a finger and an ear, but still. There was a weird cat and some other stuff that I can't share or I'll spoil your surprise. Hee-hee...

CASE FILE 13: Zombie Kid by J. Scott Savage
Genre: Middle Grade Paranormal
Publisher: Harper Collins
Released: December 2012
Pages: 288

Description: You hold in your hands a very dangerous record.

I have collected every side of the story and every piece of evidence on case number 13. Now, in this file, you will find all you need to follow the dark adventures of Nick, Carter, and Angelo, three boys who possess an unhealthy obsession with monsters, in a town so grisly, so horrific—

Whoa, whoa, whoa. You're telling it all wrong, dude. You make it sound like it's a scary story.

Ahem. Well, Nick, it is a scary story. In this volume alone, there are voodoo queens, graveyards—even the dreaded Zombie King himself.

Yeah, but there's also the part where Angie gets mashed potatoes all in her face, and the part where I use my cool zombie powers to—

All right, point taken. Now, if you don't mind . . .

You hold in your hands a very dangerous, very funny record, detailing the hilarious adventures of three boys who have an awesome obsession with monsters. This is the first volume. Read on if you dare. . . .

Now, I believe I originally saw this on Shannon O'donnell's site. I remember it, because I thought the cover was way cool, especially for an MG. If you're concerned that the story is too scary for your middle grade reader, let me put your mind at ease. It's not.

There. Feel better.

No, really. There is so much boy humor in it, you barely notice the zombie thing. It's actually kind of funny. It's a great MG read for those who don't mind a little ooey-gooey gross boy stuff. :) Love the voices, and it's a really easy read for any MGer." My favorite part of this story is the unique friendship between the three boys. They are all individuals, yet three peas in a pod - better known as the Three Monsterteers!

Buy it. You'll love it. Oh, and so will your middle grader. BTW - I'm reading Book II, right now. ;)

  1. Glad to hear it's more funny than scary. Sounds like a good book, especially for boys.

    1. I agree. I think boys will especially enjoy this one. However, I'm currently reading book II, where a group of girls comes into play. I think this one will still appeal to boys, but will totally draw in girls of this age group.

  2. This looks cute! Unfortunately none of my kids would probably read it (especially the boys). It's either too young or not scary enough for them.

  3. Zombies don't scare boys anyway. They'll probably really enjoy it.

  4. I'll be sure to try this one out on one of my unsuspecting reluctant boy readers. The cover alone should have it flying off the shelves. Thanks for featuring.

    1. I think if they give it an honest try they'll like it. I understand what it's like to have a reluctant boy reader. My oldest son and youngest both eat books for breakfast. My middle son, not so much. It's been so hard helping him find literature he's willing to read other than ice hockey magazines. lol

  5. Oh my word...yes. I will be getting this for my library. I am new there and just rebuilding the chapter book section and creating a graphic novel section which so far the kids are loving. This is a must add book. Thanks for sharing it!

  7. Sounds like a fun one! And girl sass -- I've never heard it said quite that way. :-)

    1. LOL. And book II, which I'm reading now, brings in loads more girl sass. The author brings in a group of girls from the first book and uses them more directly with the boys. Pretty funny.

  8. I'm always so happy to see books for boys. There seem to be so many for girls out there. When my boys were younger they had trouble finding stuff to read.

    1. I agree. I even had a hard time when my oldest boy (now twenty) needed something adventurous to read. There's something about that age, but also the publishing world's perception of boy readers of this age. Not sure we'll ever overcome that hurdle. Hope so!

  9. Zombie books usually give me nightmares! But a funny zombie book I could get into. Love your enthusiasm for this, Sheri!

    1. Thanks, Joanne. There is lots of boy humor in this one. I often found myself chuckling and regressing back to my younger days with my younger brother and all his crony little buddies. LOL

  16. Kids are going to love this book from the time they pull it off the shelf and see that totally scary/ wonderful cover until they read The End!

  17. It sounds like the kind of book I would definitely be buying for my fifth grade classroom ... if I was still buying for a fifth grade classroom.

But I am hanging up my teaching shingle at the end of this year, believe it or not.

However, I will keep an eye out for it in the Scholastic Book Clubs and Fairs for the remainder of this year and recommend it to my LAST class of students. (I can't believe I'm saying that.)

    1. OMGosh, Dianne. I must have missed that announcement - or if you mentioned it in a post. I'm sure it's bittersweet for you, but change is good. Tough, but good. I'm sure you've been an amazing example to your students!

  19. Wow, you weren't kidding! This does sound cool...and it's going on the pile, no matter how that endangers my toes or any other floor-dwellers that said pile might land on should it fall!

    Welcome to MMGM!
