IWSG ~ Receiving the Unexpected

Here we are at another edition of IWSG monthly question and post!

Is it really May, already?

Have any of your readers ever responded to your writing in a way that you didn't expect? If so, did it surprise you?

Yeah, that they actually liked it! 😂😂😂

On a more serious side, I guess the response that effected me the most was when I received my first award for one of my novels. In all honesty and humility, I was shocked. Many of the strong points they highlighted about my writing were things I hadn't noticed, like strong character development and my snarky use of humor. I just write that way. LOL

*Side Splat: I've been struggling with my writing since Covid began. It's not from fear, though, but from the realization of how short life is, how precious my family is to me, and how each of us has a purpose here beyond ourselves. I've been concentrating on that, NOT ignoring you all. I will forever keep you in my prayers and well-wishes. Hoping to write a longer post on this at some point in the future.

MORE PARTICIPANTS
And a huge 'Thank You' goes out to our co-hosts for this month. Make sure you stop by to pay them a visit, too!  Erika Beebe, PJ Colando, Tonja Drecker, Sadira Stone, and Cathrina Constantine!

So, what about you, fellow writer? Anything a reader mentioned about your writing surprise you?

SHERI~💖

  2. You like me, you really, really like me!
I've realized how few things of this world really matter at all...and what does matter is precious.

  3. I think all of us have had that wake-up call that anything can happen. We should appreciate the people in our lives and make sure they know how much they mean to us. :-)

  5. Sorry you've been struggling with your writing. I've been thinking about some of the same things as you lately. I'm writing but I keep on wondering if it's worth the time and energy to try to get published. That's awesome that you received the award for your book.

    1. Thanks for responding. Yes, I think continuing to write is important if that's what we want. But I was so focused on making each new project or website I contributed to or post the next stepping stone to another agent or a bigger publisher, etc..., that I was losing myself and my purpose here in this life. Writing might be part of that, but it's not first. God and my family are. I was unhappy and couldn't figure out why. It was because I lost sight of that. <3

We're in this together. Always here for you...Great job with LR, btw. Always great content.

  6. Thanks for your thoughts on the topic. I've been alternately thrilled/shocked/blindsided by readers comments... which reinforces the need for this group, I guess.

I've also been alternately thrilled and shocked when my books have earned awards. Note the POV - lots of revisions created those works of art. While writing flows freely from my fingertips, it's the re-working that can be tough

  7. That's amazing about your award! It's great that they say those things as strengths that just come natural to you.
I think it's totally normal to struggle with your writing right now. I think all that's gone on in the last year has made most of us examine our priorities. But writing is always there when you're ready.

  10. Congrats on the award. And yay for snark-- I love snark in stories.
I've been struggling with writing too. Especially my current main story, because there is a darkness and the world is bad enough in real life. So yeah.

  11. Hi Sheri - you're doing the right thing at the moment ... keeping yourself sane, keeping the family up front, while realising your writing will return, when you're ready. So pleased you've had those compliments ... they stimulate us - don't they. All the best - Hilary

  12. Times have been difficult. It's natural that it would affect your writing. I've cut back on a lot of things because of the state of the world over the past year and a half.

  13. I think I'd be too shell-shocked with an award to handle it. It's amazing how critical we are of ourselves. As to time and family and life...yep, it's blown me over too.

  14. I loved some of the reviews I got. They made me feel like I did what I set out to do. No awards - yet. :) And I agree with Hilary.
