Unicorns - Dream Uniquely

Following my A to Z Challenge theme of childhood, motherhood, and all that eeks in between, I've chosen to highlight a legendary creature today.

When I was a little girl, I had a major obsession with stuffed animals. I was that kid who had to read each of my animals a story, give them a kiss--in order, of course--and then place them ALL in bed with me. This process practically drove my dad nuts.

But there was one stuffed animal that eluded me, one no one ever bought me--the Unicorn.

I wasn't a major horse lover or anything, but there was something about this mystical horse with a sparkly horn that ignited excitement in me. Seeing a unicorn lit my little creative mind. I remember laying in bed, my arms reaching toward my ceiling. I'd trace each shadow made from the glow off my nightlight, and each time, no matter where my make believe story would take me, I'd be riding a unicorn.

Did you know that unicorns originated in Chinese mythology thousands of years ago? Many believed them to be a great omen that came to aid humans with great mission.

I'm thinking I should have one. I'm on a great mission, headed to the grocery store later today. Picture if I walked in with my friend in the picture above. I bet no one would care if I cut line at the check out. Maybe the clerk would even give my unicorn a cookie or some unicorn treat like the tellers do for my little dog at the bank.

Many people from numerous cultures around the world believe unicorns existed. It seems the only issue is that no one can agree on their true characteristics. From color to size to purpose, the stories all vary. For instance: the Eastern unicorn is a beast with the body of a deer, the tail of an ox, the hooves of a horse, and of course, a handy-dandy shiny horn. The only unique factor that is agreed upon is a unicorn's horn.

So see, maybe there really is something magical about a unicorn. That was the only factor about the unicorn which fascinated me.

Did you ever want a unicorn, stuffed animal or real?

  1. Yes I love unicorns too. In fact there's a few in my first manuscript. Didn't realize they originate from China.

  2. I figure horses exist. Horned animals exist. It's totally plausible that a horned horse existed too. But then again, same goes for dragons imo:) Did you ever see that movie 'The Last Unicorn'? I loved it when I was a kid.

  3. Wow, didn't know about the origin! My son is really drawn to them and their silver "blood" in the HP series, but I never was. I collected all things "elephant"--SO regular! :D

  4. They could have existed but I don't somehow think their horns were glittery. Wouldn't it be amazing if they really did appear when we were in trouble!

  7. I'm so glad you didn't tell me unicorns don't exist. I'm still recovering from "There's no Santa Claus." And don't even mention the Easter Bunny or the Tooth Fairy.

If I see one of those horses with a sparkly horn I'll buy it for you.

    1. So this made me crack up! I was actually going to mention the Easter bunny, but I won't. What about the Great Pumpkin, though?

  8. I never had a stuffed unicorn, but my daughter does. My younger sister was partial to the pegasus. I loved the way unicorns were written into Harry Potter.

  13. I didn't realize they originated from Chinese mythology. I don't think I ever had a unicorn teddybear either....hmmmm...It might be time to get one. :)

  14. The Last Unicorn is wonderful. And I also did not realize they originated with the Chinese. I love all types of horses....somehow a goat unicorn doesn't seem quite as magical...and goats have horns anyway. But unicorns are mystical magical. from A to Z

  16. My daughter had a thing for Unicorns growing up. I playfully asked her once if she wanted one when she grew up, her response was that no one should own a Unicorn! :)

  17. OMG I love Unicorns. If the Narwhal exists, why couldn't a Unicorn??? Have you ever seen the movie, The Last Unicorn? We saw it in the theater with my mom when we were younger and I bought the DVD for my kids. I think you should have a unicorn.

  20. We saw a mule a while back, a white one, standing at the fenceline with his head cocked such that one long ear looked just like a unicorn's horn! The kids and I and my wife all saw it, and for a moment we all believed there was a unicorn beside the road, in the shade, hanging his head over the fence watching the cars drive by.

Then he moved his head and transformed into a plain-old white mule. Poof. Gone.

It was magic. We all agreed on that point.
