Picture Book Ideas

I mentioned at the beginning of November that I was participating in Tara Lazar's PiBoIdMo. It's been an awesome month!! We had to come up with one new picture book idea each day, no outlining or writing, just an idea. It's been way fun, and I'm here to share them with YOU.

Now remember, they are skeletal ideas. I do, however, have a few outlined.

Here are my thirty-three: (We were asked to do thirty, but I couldn't help myself.)
  • The Hockey Player with Pink Pigtails
  • Snowflake Stars
  • Will I Ever Be Big?
  • The Grasshopper and the Butterfly
  • Leapin' Lizards Plus One
  • My Daddy the Vet
  • The Magic Yellow Balloon
  • Bellyflies (shh...you get them, too?)
  • Tamara the Topsy Triceritops
  • Switching Days - (lesson on days of the week)
  • The Traveling Pencil
  • Where Do the Socks Really Go?
  • Super Shot (about a hockey puck and playing fair)
  • Before I Was Your Series (Mommy, Daddy, Sister, Brother)
  • Lionel the Lazy Lizard
  • The Tangled Wig (about combing hair)
  • Tappin' Toes
  • Alex's Sock Adventure
  • Puzzles, Oh Puzzles
  • My Dollie
  • I Am a Superhero
  • Danny and His Magical Bed
  • Boo-Boo the Mangy Cat
  • My Favorite Words (Pre-K)
  • Kenny's Kickin' Soccer Game

HEE....and check out what I got:
Isn't this badge like the cutest badge you've ever seen?!

Even if PBs aren't your thing, have you ever thought of a story you think just might make a good picture book?

  1. haha! How cute. No I've never thought of making a PB, but I guess that's because I've worked on many in ELT so I've sort of been involved in it anyway. Even though it is stuff for learning English, and not just for entertainment, you still have to keep the same things in mind, such as appropriatness for age level etc.

  2. What a cool idea. Sure beats trying to write 50 K in a month.

When I first started writing, I did look into writing a PB. The plan was to write one for a child whose new sibbling is born premature, to help them understand what was going on. And that was motivated because my first born was 3 months premature, which put me at a risk of having other preemies. In the end, I didn't do it, and focused on novels instead (which I love writing).

  3. I love this list! They all sound good but I especially want to read the traveling pencil one.
I haven't thought of writing a PB. Maybe someday!

  4. omg! These are the cutest ideas, Sher! Are you sure you don't want to switch genres? The hockey player w/pink ponytails and the series book and the sock book and the bellyflies--the grasshopper and the butterfly (Beauty & the Beast?), the mangy cat???... I love them ALL!!! :D

  6. I've always loved dinosaurs so I love Tamara the Topsy Triceritops but the idea of a magical bed is awesome too. I really love your PB ideas. When are you going to start writing them?

  7. Great list. I especially like THE INCHY CRAB AND THE CRABBY INCHWORM. It conjures happy memories of the book "A Porcupine Named Fluffy."

  8. That IS a cute prize!
PBs are really my "thing" but I did write a few before I "discovered" writing novels. I love the names of some of these! The title is part of the initial draw of a book, so you've got some potential here. My faves, cuz they're catchy and unique:
The Hockey Player with Pink Pigtails
    Leapin' Lizards Plus One
    Bellyflies (shh...you get them, too?)
    The Traveling Pencil
    Boo-Boo the Mangy Cat
    The Angry Snowball
The Inchy Crab and the Crabby Inchworm

  12. These look great! I'm really interested to see what Danny and His Magical Bed is about. I've got some great images in my head from that title. I'm picturing a magical flying bed that can transport him into his dreams.

  13. I'm in awe of picture book writers, because they are so much like poetry, and I really stink at that.
