We are nearing the edge our village limits when we see the abandoned house hidden in tall weeds. The night grows darker as we huddle in a fern thicket. “It sure is spooky out here,” Lacey whispers and shifts closer to Moss.

“Let's move in closer,” Dusty says. “Moss and Lacey, you go to the other side of the house. Find a crack in the wall to see inside. Thistle and Rose follow me.” He looks back at Moss. “If you see anything strange, flick your flashlight on and off three times.”

“Then what?” Rose asks, munching on another berry.

“We’ll meet…um…” Dusty looks around and then points. “Over by that fern thicket. Is everyone clear?”

We nod and fly as low to the ground as we can. Once we reach our positions, we hunker down and wait. Time goes by as slow as a worm while we wait. It gets darker. After a while, boredom creeps in.

“What's that?” Rose points behind us.

Dusty and I turn to see a shadow coming out of the woods, heading straight for us. Boogles! No, wait. There are two shadows!

Roger Mantis by Tom Alan Brosz

Publication Date: April 2, 2019
Publisher: Tantrum Books

Baseball is Roger McGillicutty’s whole life. That is until he wakes one Saturday to find he is no longer a normal eleven-year-old boy. He's a five-foot-tall praying mantis.

Roger has school on Monday, the carnival comes to town next week, and his baseball team is poised to play their biggest rival in one week. Being a giant bug will seriously cramp Roger’s style!

To Roger’s surprise, his parents and friends are supportive. Even his dog isn’t spooked. But not everyone’s thrilled about Roger’s change. Some people are frightened and others would like nothing more than to squash him into the ground like the bug he is.

And when Little League officials oust Roger from baseball, his world collapses.

When a reporter from the city comes snooping around rumors of a man-sized baseball-playing praying mantis, Roger must choose between hiding his true self or being the hero he's always wanted to be.

Doesn't this story sound like such a hoot for an adventurous middle grade reader you know?!!! Here's a snippet from Roger's story:

Slowly, carefully, and as quietly as possible, Roger staggered across the room to the mirror over his dresser.

As prepared as he was, it was still a shock. A triangular emerald-green head looked back at him, with two enormously round green compound eyes on either side. Two long, thin antennae stuck out of the top of his head. He could move them around if he tried, kind of like wiggling his ears (which he didn’t have anymore and couldn’t wiggle when he did). His mouth was … he didn’t know what the heck his mouth was. It was a weird mess of powerful-looking cutting and crunching things and some even weirder tentacle things. Roger wiggled the many separate bits around and then quickly stopped, deciding it wasn’t quite as gross if he wasn’t moving it.

He folded his arms tightly together in front of him, side by side. He had done it without really thinking about it, but his odd posture suddenly made him realize what he had become.

“I’m a praying mantis,” he said in his new buzzy voice. “A big, frigging praying mantis.”

Tom Alan Brosz actually is a rocket scientist (sort of), having done design and engineering work in the private space industry back before the private space industry was cool. His qualifications for writing this book are that he has experience in raising children who like bugs, and raising pet mantises for those children. Normal-sized mantises, of course.

MMGM~Some Very Messy Medieval Magic by C.Lee McKenzie

Hi! *flailing wave* It's me. For today's MMGM, I'm handing over Writer's Alley to a wonderful writer and friend. Please give C.L. McKenzie a warm Alleyway welcome! She's celebrating the release of her latest middle grade book.

Hi Sheri. I was going back in ye olde archives, trying to remember how long we've been in touch. Quite a while it turns out. Remember being a MOD?

Haha! Yes I do remember our old days at YALitchat.

Great days. Great fun. And here we are still talking books and writing and promotion. Thanks so much for giving me this space on your blog today.

You are so welcome. I'm going to step back and let you tell the readers about your latest middle grade book. Have fun!
💙
Book #3 in The Adventures of Pete and Weasel arrived May 15. Some Very Messy Medieval Magic was as much fun to write as the others, and I loved getting into the history during the time of Richard II!

Here's some of what I learned while doing some research:
  • Moats were not quite the romantic, protective water that surrounded a castle or manor house. Nope. Kind of stinky, really.
  • Pages served knights to learn the trade and one of their jobs was to keep the armor rust-free. They used salt to scrub the metal, then rendered fat to protect it.
  • Richard II, who later became Richard the Lion Hearted, was a party animal and he loved to sing. He even led his church choir.
The 1100s were an interesting time during this medieval era, and I'm glad I had a chance to explore them. I hope readers will enjoy traveling back to the days of knights and castles and kings.

The Adventures of Pete and Weasel now has three books
Some Very Messy Medieval Magic arrives
May 15
Instead of writing a tagline to explain what this series is about, here's the trailer that sums of the three books very quickly.

Here's how this latest adventure begins.

By the fourth week of eighth grade, everybody in class, including know-it-all, Curtis Lamont,  decided that having Dr. Dread Wraith as a teacher until June was going to be worse than a bowl of turnips for dessert.

The pop quizzes weren’t even a surprise anymore because he gave one almost every day. And all any kid had to do was squirm when Wraith was giving one of his lectures on the theory of general relativity, which nobody—even Weasel—had ever heard of, and he’d slap them with detention.

They cringed every time they heard his name. It was a cringe-able name after all. Pete wanted to tell the kids the reason Dr. Dread Wraith called himself that, but he didn’t want to bring up how their sub was really a bigwig in the Cross-Temporal Consortium of Witches and Wizards. Or that he had to go toe to toe with bad dudes like Genghis Khan. Like Wraith told him, without his bone-chilling name, he didn’t have the clout he needed.

If Pete did explain all of that, then that would lead to having to explain how Wraith, who wasn’t really a bad guy, just a menace of a teacher, had followed Pete and Weasel back from their last time trip.  And that. . .well, that was just too much for any eighth grader to swallow.

MMGM~DRATS! Foiled Again! by K.L. Lantz & Giveaway!

Hi Everyone! It's been a while since I've participating in MMGM, but here I am. And wait 'til you see the awesome middle grade read I have for you. *Make sure you scroll to the bottom of this post to enter for your chance to win one of 2 ARC copies of DRATS. FOILED AGAIN! + a snazzy keychain or a $10 Amazon Gift Card!

DRATS. FOILED AGAIN!
by K.L. Lantz

Description: Robert Gilbrinkle is blind in one eye, which makes dodging punches in his Anti-Hero Maneuvers class especially difficult, but his lack of depth perception is the least of his troubles. Nox Academy’s senior project deadline is fast approaching, he's failing three classes, and, naturally, his evil twin Rupert keeps trying to kill him every chance he gets.

But the real trouble begins when Robert’s pathetic superpower--a very unwicked superwink that fixes anything broken--starts to evolve. The kids at Nox used to laugh and call him "Rob Repairman" but nobody is laughing now. His wink threatens anyone who threatens him.

Robert has always known where he stands - on the other side of the hall from Rupert. What haunts him the most is the revelation that maybe he and Rupert aren't as different as he thought. Battling a common enemy brings them closer than either twin can handle, but the lives of their friends are at stake and the thirst for revenge is strong. Maybe even stronger than their disdain for each other.

With the playful cartoonish style and broad crossover appeal of Disney’s SKY HIGH, and the coming of age heroic drama of Matthew Cody’s POWERLESS, Robert’s story will resonate with kids from 8 to 14 who love to escape to that comic book world of good vs. evil and often wonder where in the midst of that universe they fit in.
Now, let's meet the author.

Hi Katrina! I'm thrilled to have you share your thoughts in the Alleyway. Tell us, were you a reader as a child or did you have someone special read to you? Did you have a favorite book or story?
Yes, reading was my escape from the meanness of the bullies around me, a lot like Robert in the story. I read the whole school library in junior high, and while I don't remember most of the titles, I will never forget the life lessons they taught me. My mom gave me Anne of Green Gables when I was in fourth grade, and my reading teacher gave me The Girl With the Silver Eyes. I still love both those books!

Anne of Green Gables...one of my favorites! Where did this idea come from and how did you develop it?
I don't know if other writers experience this, but I'm often inspired by movies, particular the kind with lots of action! It was six or seven years ago that I watched Disney's Sky High, and immediately started trying to imagine a school for villains. Instead of having the kids go away to a boarding school, I played with the idea of them living in a villain community hidden deep in the forests of Florida. What kinds of jobs would their parents have? What would that home life look like? And what if you plopped a normal person like Robert right in the middle of that environment? Drats, Foiled Again! was born. Robert is a twin, but rather than a baseline of Good that gives us the idea of an "evil twin," Robert is the odd one--the good twin. After writing Drats, Foiled Again! from his point of view, I knew I had to write the twin book, Bombs Away! from Rupert's point of view. So that is coming this summer.

What two super heroes adequately describe your main character? What two villains adequately describe your main antagonist?
Robert's got the penchant for reading of Peter Parker and the survival instinct of Bruce Banner. Rupert is a Lex Luthor-like supergenius, but with great hair. He's also obsessed with technology like the Big Hero 6 villain, Robert Callaghan.

What do you think readers will learn from this story?
Drats, Foiled Again! deals with the inner struggle between good and evil, so I've included Family Discussion Questions in the back of the book to encourage dialogue especially between parents and kids. I feel parents are vital to helping kids find their identity on the spectrum of good vs. evil, and have a special interest in helping them to navigate what constitutes "good" and what constitutes "evil."

That's awesome. Those family questions are a great way to get the entire family engaged in the reading.

Any thoughts about author platforms or the ever-changing publishing world you'd like to share?
Actually I want to talk about Impostor Syndrome. Amy Cuddy in her book, Presence, made me aware of its role in my writer life. Impostor Syndrome is the feeling that, even after multiple proofs of your goodness and capabilities in the form of success, you're just a fake and you don't belong up here with the other successful people. Amy Cuddy demonstrated in her book that Impostor Syndrome is rampant in our professional and academic worlds, but I think it especially applies to authors. Think about the distinction between calling yourself a writer or an author, and how many people in our field hesitate to say, "I'm a writer," or, "I'm an author," even after they've written an entire book. Or the conferences where even the nametag ribbons feed our inferiority complexes. You can choose one that reads, "author" or one that reads, "writer."

Many published authors still feel pretentious putting on that "author" ribbon if they haven't been published through a big press or won an award or been featured on a big, important list. After years of observing and blogging about the writing/publishing industry, I realized I had Impostor Syndrome bad! The need for validation is real, but what I've learned is that the most powerful and lasting validation comes from within. So, to other writers and authors, however you see yourself, I want to say this: believe in yourself. Believe that, if you feel compelled to write, what you have to say is worth saying. You are not a fake, not an impostor. Whether you haven't published yet, have self-published, or published with a small press, none of that defines you or your talent. We write because there is something inside banging on the outside walls for release. We are writers. We are authors. To borrow a line from The Greatest Showman, "We are glorious!"

Can you leave us with one valuable piece of writerly advice you want to offer to aspiring writers.
You are already a writer. Aspire, but don't think of yourself as an aspiring writer. You're already there. You write, therefore you are.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us! Wishing you loads of success with this book.

MMGM~Dr. Fell and the Playground of Doom by David Neilsen & #Giveaway

I've got a wonderful book to share on this Marvelous Middle Grade Monday! #ILoveMG I also have the author here to share a bit about his writing journey & an awesome chance for you to win a signed copy of his book! But first, let's peek at the story he's created.

Dr. Fell and the Playground of Doom
by David Neilsen

GENRE: Middle Grade Creepy / Silly
PUBLISHER: Crown Books for Young Readers
RELEASE DATE: August 9, 2016.

FAVORITE LINE: "A supremely pleasant good morning to you, urchins," announced the man slowly in a high-pitched, weak, warbling voice. "Are you residents of this fine enclave of humanity?"

DESCRIPTION: "When the mysterious Dr. Fell moves into the abandoned house that had once been the neighborhood kids’ hangout, he immediately builds a playground to win them over. But as the ever-changing play space becomes bigger and more elaborate, the children and their parents fall deeper under the doctor’s spell.

Only Jerry, Nancy, and Gail are immune to the lure of his extravagant wonderland. And they alone notice that when the injuries begin to pile up on the jungle gym, somehow Dr. Fell is able to heal each one with miraculous speed. Now the three children must find a way to uncover the doctor’s secret power without being captivated by his trickery."

Isn't this an awesome cover for a middle grade tale?!!!

Welcome to the Alleyway, David! We're excited to have you here.

Alleywalkers wave & give cheerful 'hellos'.

Why don't we start with what inspired you to write this story.
The inspiration to write Dr. Fell and the Playground of Doom came from a single image. The late children's illustrator Trina Schart Hyman drew a black-and-white illustration for charity depicting an old man in a top hat leering down at little girl while on his back, he carries a basket filled with hands, feet, and heads of little children. It is labeled "Dr. Fell." I'd seen this picture on my mother-in-law's wall for years before finally being driven to know more. I discovered the genesis of her image came from a four-line poem written in the 1600's. "I do not like thee Dr. Fell - The reason why I cannot tell - But this I know and know full well - I do not like thee Dr. Fell."

Oh wow, that's quite inspiring. I love it when visual images stir so much creativity.

Give us a sneak peek into one of your favorite characters.
The main antagonist is, of course, Dr. Fell. When I began writing him, what jumped out at me was his use of language. It is unlike anything I've ever written, and I quickly grew to admire the way he uses vocabulary to feel superior to others. He is manipulative and cruel on the inside while remaining sunny and pleasant on the outside.

What is your favorite part of this story?
My favorite part of the story is near the end, and I don't want to give anything away. However, what makes it special for me is that I always knew my editor and publisher would question me over this section and probably ask me to remove it. I took pains to explain my reasoning behind what I'd written and they eventually agreed to keep this particular section in the book.

That's admirable. I think it shows readers how hard you've worked on this story and how important this ending is to you. <3

If you don't mind, tell your readers something quirky or unexpected about yourself.
In addition to writing, I work as a professional storyteller in Sleepy Hollow, NY and spend much of October frightening little children.

Sleepy Hollow ... Love it!

What can your fans expect from you next?
This August, my second book, Beyond the Doors, is being published. This is not a sequel to Dr. Fell, but a new, mysterious story about four children who wind up in the care of a family member they never knew existed. She's odd, but her house is even more odd, as it is large, round, and has no doors anywhere. When they eventually discover what has happened to all the doors, they enter a whole new world of adventure.

I really appreciate you stopping by for a visit, David. It's been wonderful! All the best to you with Dr. Fell and all your future projects. Feel free to drop by anytime...

Alleywalkers ... don't forget to enter David's giveaway. It'd be great if you'd share, too. TY!
